Old Stoney This historic landmark – affectionately known as Old Stoney – has been reimagined as a vibrant cultural and community hub. This historic landmark – affectionately known as Old Stoney – has been reimagined as a vibrant cultural and community hub. Originally constructed in 1923, Old Stoney functioned as a public school for over 50 years before closing and succumbing to decades of vacancy and disrepair. The structure is not just a part of the town's identity – it IS the town's identity. Revitalizing Old Stoney became more than simply a historic renovation project, but rather an entire economic development strategy, a community revitalization initiative, and a symbol of place-based resilience. Already listed on the National Register of Historic Places, maintaining this designation was central to the design. Renovation efforts focused on reestablishing the building's core infrastructure – along with meeting modern code and accessibility requirements. The sub-basement was excavated and structurally shored beneath the existing footings to allow for additional program space, concealed MEP systems, and secure curatorial archives. A new elevator was strategically placed within the building's interior, preserving the historic exterior facades in their entirety. Original hardwood floors, trim, and grand staircases were carefully refinished. New replica steel-framed windows with UV-resistant glazing flood the galleries with natural light while preserving the historic character. Soffits were sealed to prevent future bat intrusion; ADA-compliant restrooms were added; the fire escape was reconstructed; and the beloved masonry facade - a civic landmark - is now illuminated at night.
